Chiado has always been the artistic and cultural soul of Lisbon. The world-known Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa was born in this neighborhood, famous for its cafes - the most distinctive is the historical Brasileira which artists and intellectuals from all over Europe still hang out in. As well as its elegant cafes the area offers the most renowned theatres and the oldest bookshops in town.
